Course Title:
Creating a Classroom for Student Success: Classroom Practice of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
Course Description:
This course offers educators an opportunity to further examine issues relevant to the creation of a Culturally Responsive Classroom. Students will have the opportunity to examine critical issues on race, racial identity and white identity development in society, classrooms and school settings. The course empowers educators to engage in critical and intellectual dialogue on race, racism and racial identity and reflect on the implications in the school environment. Participants of this course will engage in active development of curriculum writing as well as the collection of relevant curricular resources.
Students will attend both the CREATE Pre-Conference April 27, 2011 (6 hours) and the CREATE Conference April 28, 2011 (8 hours) at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center Green Bay, Wisconsin. Course content will be the materials, handouts and information presented at the CREATE Pre-Conference and the CREATE Conference. Students will participate in the general session and sectionals.
Course Time/Expectations:
April 26-27 - Green Bay - 1 CREATE Pre-Conference event (6 hours)
April 28, 2011 – Green Bay – CREATE Conference (8 hours)
March – May - On-line discussions and Course sessions with Professor (5 hours)
May – On-line discussions completed – Unit completed
Goals/Objectives:
1: To develop an awareness of the ways in which race affects attitudes and biases within the school setting.
2: To empower educators and social service providers to deconstruct biases.
3: To examine the issue of white privilege.
4: To engage in discussion with other educators on curriculum and ways to improve curriculum and the classroom environment.
5: To write a Culturally Responsive Curriculum Unit
6: To create a Culturally Responsive resource bank.
Assignments:
1: Meet with the instructor at registration for course objectives and requirements.
2: Participate in 5 hours of on-line discussions and unit analysis.
3: Complete a Curriculum Unit with resources based on the ideals of a Culturally Responsive Classroom.
